The Men’s and Women’s Club Championship tournaments were held last Saturday and Sunday at the Southampton Golf and Country Club, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather.

The men’s group was divided into three flights based on their handicaps while the ladies fought it out in one Championship flight.  And the competition was fierce at times, as players were often tied within their flights.  At the end of the day, two players stood out from the rest. Here are their stories.

 Men’s Club Championship

This two-day event featured the low handicap players in a Championship flight, although anyone from the other flights could shoot lights out and win the Championship.

That didn’t happen this year, but there were some great rounds of golf as one player moved up to play in the Championship group on day two. On Day one, in the Championship flight, Todd Zadow, who cards a handicap of 3, took the lead with a great round of 77.

Bruce Towner, the reigning champ from last year, was only three strokes back, while several others were within striking range.

In the B-flight, on the first day of play, Jim Martin took the lead with a great round of 81, but Harold Agla was only three strokes back with an 84. There were several others relatively close but they would need to shoot a great round in day two.

In the B-flight, where only net prizes would be awarded, John Hale took the early lead with a great score of 83 on the first day of play. He had a healthy lead over his competitors and just had to keep it steady on day two and not make any huge mistakes.

But John had a tough day, shooting a round of 96, leaving the door open for his competitors to catch up.  It was just as tough for the others though, and at the end of the two days of play, John Hale was the First Net Champion in the B-flight with a two-day net score of 147.

Fabian Libbus tried his best to catch Hale, and wound up winning Second Low Net with a net 149. Other winners in B-flight were Chris Page in third spot, Ron Wilson in fourth place and Eric Tait taking fifth spot.

In the A-flight, Martin shot 90, giving an opportunity for others to get close, and Agla did just that, carding an 81 for a two-day gross total of 164. Harold was the Low Gross Champion in the A-flight, while Martin held on to take Second Low Gross with a two day total of 171.  Terry Bailey won First Low Net in the flight with a two day net score of 152, followed by Peter Quigley with a net 155.

In the Championship flight, Zadow was too good for anyone to catch, as he shot 77 for the second day and is the 2020 Men’s Club Champion. Congratulations, Todd.  Well done!  Gerry Call was the Low Net Champion in the flight with a two- day net core of 151.  Bruce Towner won Second Low Gross with a total of 161.

 Ladies’ Club Championship

The ladies competed in the two-day event last weekend as well, and after the first day of play, Sarah Wright took the early lead with a fine round of 93.

Melanie Martin, Erica Page and Jan Holmes knew they had some ground to make up on the second day, and it looked like that may happen as Wright shot a 52 on the front nine giving the others in contention a chance. But  Wright turned up the back burners on the back nine, shooting a fantastic round of 41 for a second round of 93.

Sarah Wright is the Ladies’ Club Champion with a two day total of 186. Great golfing Sarah.  Congratulations!
