Wendel Clark coming to Southampton

Wendel Clark, one of the most popular members of the Toronto Maple Leafs ever to wear the blue and white, is among the sports celebrities coming to the 25th anniversary Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce Charity Golf Tournament.

The Leafs will be well represented at the June 1 event as former players Billy Derlago and Tom Fergus will be joining Clark.

Other former and present NHL players will also be playing in the event but their names have not yet been released.

Playing host to the event once again is the former Chippewa Golf Club, which is now known as Southampton Golf and Country Club.

Over the past 24 years the Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament has attracted several stars from the world of sports including Marcel Dionne, Gerry Cheevers, Steve Shutt, Dale Hawerchuk, Brad Park, Pierre Pilote, Les Binkley, Bobby Hull, Paul MacDermid, Pete Mahovlich, Pat Hickey, Gregg Zaun, Justin Peters, Brett MacLean, Curtis Sanford, Larisa Yurkiw, Chris Neil and Adam Oates.

Thanks to the involvement of individuals and members of the business community the tournament has provided a large part of Crime Stoppers operating revenue over the past 24 years, raising just over $458,000.00.

While the tournament is in its 25th year, Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce is also celebrating a milestone of its own with 30 years of service as a locally operated registered charitable program governed by a civilian volunteer board of directors.

Crime Stoppers offers a service to law enforcement agencies throughout the twin counties by providing anonymous information from the public on crimes ranging from Highway Traffic Act offences to narcotics production operations and everything in between.

Crime Stoppers continues to be community policing in its purest form by allowing the public to be part of the solution to crime in our communities.

Statistics illustrate the success of the program as it has exceeded $51.9 million in total seized narcotics and stolen property.

It has also received over 13,600 tips since the program’s inception in 1987.

The board members are all volunteers.

The tournament co-sponsors are Trillium Mutual Insurance and Waterloo Brewing Company.
