Thornbury pro wins Ontario PGA Spring Open

King crowned champion

G.W. King, left, receives the trophy after winning the PGA of Ontario's Spring Open.

G. W. King of the Academy at Georgian Bay Club fired rounds of 64-71 to win the PGA of Ontario Spring Open at Tarandowah Golfers Club.

The Thornbury resident finished with a -5 total and picked up $2,000 for the win.

He finished four shots ahead of second place finisher Dennis Hendershott of Hi5golf, who shot 70-69.

King used an aggressive style at the course, which led to him shooting 6-under par on the first day.

The impact of the victory, his first "major" on the Ontario PGA circuit, hit him after the event.

"After I got home, I was looking at the names on this trophy and I reflected on how many times I have played in this championship and how many times I looked at this trophy at the registration table every year," he states in a PGA of Ontario news release.

"I don't think I ever really believed that I was good enough to win a major PGA of Ontario event until maybe last year.  Coming into this year I felt that this was a real possibility and to have my name on that trophy means a lot more to me than I thought it might."

The only other BruceGreySimcoe pro in the field was John Schmidt of Southampton Golf and Country Club who shot 84-83 and tied for 51st.

The event was held June 4-5.
